---------------------
January is traditionally our slowest month of the year. We’ve used this time to travel a little bit, spend time with family and friends and make a few changes around the Museum to start the year off right. One of the nicest things to happen is because there were fewer visitors we were able to invest more "one on one" time with a lot of people who come to The Beat Museum. And one thing I heard from a number of different visitors who have been on our mailing list for years is how much they appreciate our keeping them up to date with this newsletter on all things Beat happening all around the world. It was very gratifying to hear and gives us the momentum to close out January with a bang and push forward with the full expectation of a magnificent 2012.

1). KEROUAC’S SCROLL ON EXHIBIT IN INDIANAPOLIS THROUGH MAY 6th
Jim Irsay is the owner of the Indianapolis Colts and he bought the scroll a decade ago for $2.4M. It has been reported he’s been offered up to $8M for this iconic piece of Beat history and he won’t sell it. Good for Jim! Instead, The Scroll has toured the world for people to see and this past weekend an exhibition called “Chaos is a Friend of Mine” opened at The Indianapolis State Museum in conjunction with Super Bowl Week. Jack’s scroll will be on display in Indianapolis through May 6th.

2). NEAL CASSADY BIRTHDAY BASH IN DENVER - Feb 3rd 8-10pm
They’re doing it again in Denver - celebrating Neal’s Birthday this Friday night at The Mercury Cafe. David Amram will be there as will Neal & Carolyn’s daughters Jami and Cathy. Steve Edington with Lowell Celebrates Kerouac and Junior Burke from Naropa’s "Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics" will be there, too.

NOTE: Because John Cassady is in England with his mum Carolyn (and both his sisters will be in Denver) we won’t be holding a Neal Bash at TBM this year. Instead we have something very special we’re scheduling for March that we’ll tell you about very soon.

5). NEWS OUT OF SUNDANCE
Park City, Utah is a beautiful little town not far from Salt Lake City and the home of the Sundance Film Festival. I’ve only been to Sundance once (in 1999 for the premier of Chuck Worman’s great film The Source). It was a blast and if you ever get the chance I say “Go!” by all means. This year there are two Beat related stories out of Sundance:
-----
A). Kirsten Dunst & Garrett Hedlund are an Item
WHO SAYS JOHN ALLEN CASSADY CAN’T KEEP A SECRET? We made a little fun of John a month or two ago joking how he’s the one who spilled the beans that Walter Salles was sending us the ‘49 Hudson after we had kept that secret at The Beat Museum for a year! What John didn't tell anyone was the reason Garrett Hedlund was slightly delayed in driving the ‘49 Hudson up from LA is he was spending time with his OTR co-star Kirsten Dunst.
We’re not into rumors and gossip at The Beat Museum but it’s all over the tabloids now so it’s safe for us to talk about it. John was beside himself as he told us privately the reason for the delay of the delivery of the Mighty Hudson back in November of last year. “You’re not going to believe it. Garrett sent me a cryptic email saying he was going to be delayed because he was ‘dating my mother.’” Dating his mother? What the hell was he talking about? And then the news came out and it explained everything: Garrett Hedlund, the actor playing John's father Neal Cassady was dating Kirsten Dunst the actor playing his mother Carolyn Cassady. Horror of horrors, what’s a son to do?
There are no good photos of the two together on the web that we could find. The only things public so far are some grainy videos that don’t show much or some pics of the two walking down the street one behind the other the way celebrities sometimes do to keep things on the down-low, but the story is everywhere after Sundance. We haven't met Kirsten but you know how highly we think of Garrett and we wish them both well.

B). Variety Says On The Road is Gonna Be Great
JOSH DICKEY WRITES FOR VARIETY and he was at the Sundance Film Festival last week and as he was boarding the plane for his flight back to LA he sent out the following excited five tweets on Twitter. We copied them below and you need to read them from the bottom up:
