5). Big News Out of Sundance Film Festival
---------------------

January is traditionally our slowest month of the year. We’ve used this time to travel a little bit, spend time with family and friends and make a few changes around the Museum to start the year off right. One of the nicest things to happen is because there were fewer visitors we were able to invest more "one on one" time with a lot of people who come to The Beat Museum. And one thing I heard from a number of different visitors who have been on our mailing list for years is how much they appreciate our keeping them up to date with this newsletter on all things Beat happening all around the world. It was very gratifying to hear and gives us the momentum to close out January with a bang and push forward with the full expectation of a magnificent 2012.
----------------------

1). KEROUAC’S SCROLL ON EXHIBIT IN INDIANAPOLIS THROUGH MAY 6th
Jim Irsay is the owner of the Indianapolis Colts and he bought the scroll a decade ago for $2.4M. It has been reported he’s been offered up to $8M for this iconic piece of Beat history and he won’t sell it. Good for Jim! Instead, The Scroll has toured the world for people to see and this past weekend an exhibition called “Chaos is a Friend of Mine” opened at The Indianapolis State Museum in conjunction with Super Bowl Week. Jack’s scroll will be on display in Indianapolis through May 6th.
2). NEAL CASSADY BIRTHDAY BASH IN DENVER - Feb 3rd 8-10pm
They’re doing it again in Denver - celebrating Neal’s Birthday this Friday night at The Mercury Cafe. David Amram will be there as will Neal & Carolyn’s daughters Jami and Cathy. Steve Edington with Lowell Celebrates Kerouac and Junior Burke from Naropa’s "Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics" will be there, too.

NOTE: Because John Cassady is in England with his mum Carolyn (and both his sisters will be in Denver) we won’t be holding a Neal Bash at TBM this year. Instead we have something very special we’re scheduling for March that we’ll tell you about very soon.
5). NEWS OUT OF SUNDANCE
Park City, Utah is a beautiful little town not far from Salt Lake City and the home of the Sundance Film Festival. I’ve only been to Sundance once (in 1999 for the premier of Chuck Worman’s great film The Source). It was a blast and if you ever get the chance I say “Go!” by all means. This year there are two Beat related stories out of Sundance:

-----

A). Kirsten Dunst & Garrett Hedlund are an Item
WHO SAYS JOHN ALLEN CASSADY CAN’T KEEP A SECRET? We made a little fun of John a month or two ago joking how he’s the one who spilled the beans that Walter Salles was sending us the ‘49 Hudson after we had kept that secret at The Beat Museum for a year! What John didn't tell anyone was the reason Garrett Hedlund was slightly delayed in driving the ‘49 Hudson up from LA is he was spending time with his OTR co-star Kirsten Dunst.

We’re not into rumors and gossip at The Beat Museum but it’s all over the tabloids now so it’s safe for us to talk about it. John was beside himself as he told us privately the reason for the delay of the delivery of the Mighty Hudson back in November of last year. “You’re not going to believe it. Garrett sent me a cryptic email saying he was going to be delayed because he was ‘dating my mother.’” Dating his mother? What the hell was he talking about? And then the news came out and it explained everything: Garrett Hedlund, the actor playing John's father Neal Cassady was dating Kirsten Dunst the actor playing his mother Carolyn Cassady. Horror of horrors, what’s a son to do?

There are no good photos of the two together on the web that we could find. The only things public so far are some grainy videos that don’t show much or some pics of the two walking down the street one behind the other the way celebrities sometimes do to keep things on the down-low, but the story is everywhere after Sundance. We haven't met Kirsten but you know how highly we think of Garrett and we wish them both well.

-----

B). Variety Says On The Road is Gonna Be Great
JOSH DICKEY WRITES FOR VARIETY and he was at the Sundance Film Festival last week and as he was boarding the plane for his flight back to LA he sent out the following excited five tweets on Twitter. We copied them below and you need to read them from the bottom up:
1). JANUARY SALE
There’s an old saying, “Cash is King.” So in the interest of helping us get through these bleak winter doldrums I’d like to send out a call for some of you kind folks to spend some money. We’re not in trouble so there is no need to worry but our landlord does like it when we pay the rent on time so if you can spend some money in one of the two following ways we’d sure appreciate it!

A). FREE SHIPPING IN THE USA (through month end)
Make a purchase from our website for $35 or more and we’ll ship it anywhere in the US for free. This offer is good through the end of the month (January 31st)

Yes, Jerry! I wanna buy something. I’m going to Kerouac.com to make a purchase right now!
http://www.kerouac.com/homepage.htm
----

B). 20% OFF ALL MUSEUM GIFT SHOP PURCHASES (through month end)
And just for you LOCALS here in the Bay Area (or if you’re visiting SF) we’re offering a 20% OFF SALE for everything currently in stock in our Gift Shop. All you need to do when you drop in to see us is say, “Psssttt, I’m here for the 20% off.” Good through the end of the month, January 31st.

Come in to the Museum Gift Shop and spend some Big Bucks!

2). FOOTBALL!
The Playoffs are upon us and then it’s on to The Super Bowl in Indianapolis. Big Beat Generation linkages here, don’tcha know! Of course Jack Kerouac was a star football player in Lowell and won a scholarship to Columbia where he broke his leg and got laid up long enough to start writing with a fervor. And, of course, the Super Bowl will be held in Indianapolis this year where the owner of the Indianapolis Colts will be displaying Jack’s scroll of “On The Road” during the big event.

PERSONAL ASIDE TO JIM IRSAY, OWNER OF THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Jim, I don’t know if you’re one of the 15,000 people who receive this newsletter but if perchance you are you might recall how you invited John Allen Cassady and me to be your guests in your private box for a Colts home game back in 2005 when we were making one of our cross-country trips in The Mighty Beatmobile. We were about 800 miles out of Indianapolis when we got the word and we arrived a day late for the game so we weren’t able to take you up on your offer.

Now, on the off chance both the Baltimore Ravens and the SF Forty Niners happen to win this weekend, turning the Super Bowl into the “Harbough Bowl,” I’d sure be pleased if you were to re-extend an offer for us to come to Indianapolis for the Super Bowl. (For those of you not in the know about football, this year represents the very first time in history two brothers (Ravens & ‘49’s) who both happen to be NFL coaches could face each other in the Super Bowl).

You see, Jim, I grew up in Baltimore. I actually went to Super Bowl 3 in Miami when Joe Namath’s NY Jets beat the Baltimore Colts giving legitimacy to the AFL. It was the only time I ever saw my father cry in public. My dad was a Baltimore Colts season ticket holder. I was fourteen years old and I said, “Dad, what are you crying for? It’s a football game?” He said, “Jer, it’s the Colts.”

So, Jim, if the Ravens and the Niners win, do you think you could send me and John Allen Cassady each a ticket (with a +1) so we could come be your guests to Indianapolis? I mean, The Beat Museum is in San Francisco. I grew up in Baltimore. And Cassady is Cassady for crying out loud. No need to send your private jet, we can find our own way out. Maybe Walter Salles would be OK if we drove the ‘49 Hudson out with Garrett Hedlund? Maybe Garrett could drive the old Hudson around the infield during halftime? How cool would that be?

Jim, my email is jerry@kerouac.com. Feel free to get in touch!
3). BEAT GENERATION - NORTH BEACH WALKING TOURS
This weekend marks the relaunching of our Beat Generation Walking Tours here in North Beach. See the apartment where Ginsberg lived when he wrote Howl back in 1955. Check out the bars and the restaurants and coffeehouses the Beats would hang at back in the fifties. Sit on the park benches where Carolyn Cassady would sit with Jack Kerouac as they ate lunch while Neal was on an S&P run to San Louis Obispo.

Walking Tours are $20 apiece and run one weekend a month through June.

4). THE ‘49 HUDSON IN ARGENTINA?
Speaking of the ‘49 Hudson, here are some terrific photos of that magnificent car. This is not the exact car that now resides at The Beat Museum. This is a 2nd car that was secured in South America and used as a stand-in for the filming of the Rocky Mountains on a snowy mountaintop in Argentina. You might recall we told the story of how when it came time to film the Hudson driving over the Rocky Mountains it was summertime here in the US. People told Walter Salles he should just use a blue screen, but that’s not Walter’s style. He had to have real snow on real mountaintops. He remembered how when he was filming Motorcycle Diaries there was a perfect stretch of road.... in the Andes in Argentina! Walter had a team go looking for a matching ‘49 Hudson in South America and they found one in Chile.

These photos are of that car secured to a tow vehicle so Garrett didn’t have to worry about driving the car in the ice while remembering his lines with Kristen Stewart and Sam Riley in the car.
1). MARK MAY 23, 2012 ON YOUR CALENDAR
The internet websites are abuzz with the news that came via a tweet yesterday from the French Film Production Company MK2. They announced the French Release of OTR the movie will be May 23rd. Now, we have no inside info but we can read a calendar as well as anyone and the Cannes Film Festival is May 16 - May 27. Hmmm. And Walter Salles has a long history at Cannes with a number of his films as well as an OTR trailer at the 2011 festival. Double hmmmm. And MK2 is a French company. Triple hmmmmm.
2). AL HINKLE & GARRETT HEDLUND POSE WITH WORLDWIDE EDITIONS OF ON THE ROAD
Horst Spandler's magnificent collection of over 100 copies of On The Road was on exhibit at The Beat Museum for the better part of a year. When it came time to take down the exhibit we timed it so we could catch Garrett Hedlund, John Allen Cassady and Al Hinkle the day they delivered the '49 Hudson.

Garrett and Al were both great sports, allowing us to pile the books all over them for the photo-op. A good time was had by all!
3). EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH WALTER SALLES ON WHY THE '49 HUDSON IS AT THE BEAT MUSUEM
Elle Lutz is a Chicago based writer who reached out to both Walter and me about the significance of the '49 Hudson. She just posted the first part of a two part article (part 2 will be up in a day or two). It's an insightful article for the true Beat/Kerouac fan (and I'm not just saying that because she spelled my name right and quoted me nicely). There are some hidden gems and stories.
4). NORTH BEACH WALKING TOURS RESUME AT THE BEAT MUSEUM
We've been doing Beat Generation Walking Tours (based on Bill Morgan's excellent book SF Walking Guide) for years now, mostly in the summer. Then two weeks ago we hooked up with Groupon and pre-sold hundreds of Walking Tours for the next six months. If you're planning on visiting San Francisco any time soon you can buy a ticket and reserve a space.

Thank you!

As always, thanks very much for your continued support. 2011 was a terrific year for The Beat Museum - a new website, the '49 Hudson arrived, beginning stages of a remodel in the works, lots of new patrons discovering us for the first time and old friends stopping in for a visit. We're very grateful for our continued success and thank everyone who has shared our journey in all the big and small ways.

And 2012 is gonna be even bigger and better!

Jerry

PS: If you have any Holiday money left over, please make a purchase via the website. Cash flow is the name of the game and we're all feeling better now because the economy is improving.
THE ‘49 HUDSON IS NOW ON DISPLAY AT THE BEAT MUSEUM

1). Five years ago, when we moved The Beat Museum from our humble beginnings in Monterey, CA to San Francisco, directly across the street from City Lights Bookstore, we started searching around for a ‘49 Hudson. We didn’t have a budget to buy one, of course, but that’s never stopped us before so we just sat around expecting one to show up one day. That day came about last week!

See, we had put out the word and after a period of time a good friend named Mike who we know from the Caffe Trieste came in one day and said, “I have a friend named Gunnar who owns a ‘41 Pontiac and I think he’d be willing to let you use it until the Hudson shows up.” So, we contacted Carolyn Cassady and asked, “Carolyn, did Neal ever own a Pontiac?” Carolyn's response was, “Neal owned dozens and dozens cars over the years, one of them had to have been a Pontiac.” And then we did a little more digging and discovered the car in the famous photo taken by Allen Ginsberg of Neal behind the wheel with his chiseled good looks and a girl by his side (Anne Marie Maxwell) is indeed a Pontiac. Car geeks we know were able to discern this by looking at the steering wheel. So, we accepted the loan of the Pontiac from Gunnar as a ‘place-holder’ for the ‘49 Hudson and we billed it as, “The kind of car Neal Cassady might have stolen.”

Well, today there’s a NEW CAR on the block and it’s a ‘49 HUDSON!
2). BEAT BY THE BAY - SF VISUAL ARTISTS & GALLERIES OF THE FIFTIES
Often overlooked and/or under-appreciated by the literary among us is the visual arts scene that was going on in San Francisco simultaneously with the Beat writers. These artists typically traveled in the same circles as the writers we know and love. Wally Hedrick, Jay De Fao, Bruce Conner, Wallace Berman, Joan Brown and many others we’re on the scene and many poetry events of that era we held in local galleries - places such as King Ubu, The Six, East and West, Batman, and Dilexi. And as we all know Ginsberg read Howl for the first time at The Six Gallery which was so named because it was started by six artists.

Beginning this week the Ever Gold Gallery is hosting an exhibition celebrating these visual artists and their works. The exhibition runs from now until January 6th and there is a Curatorial Talk this Thursday December 15th at 7:30 by John Held Jr.
3). TOUR INDIA - THE BEAT GENERATION WAY
There’s a Travel Company in Sausalito that is offering a chance of a lifetime. It’s an opportunity to travel to India with an experienced Tour Guide and follow in the footsteps of the Beats on an 18 day excursion. Even if you think you can’t spare 18 days away you should at least look at the itinerary. Fascinating!
1). NEW PHOTO EXHIBITION - THE BEAT HOTEL IN PARIS 1957 -
The Beats are best known as mid-century change agents who had a huge impact on American culture. But did you know some of their most memorable and prolific works were actually written at The Beat Hotel in Paris while they were hanging out with a number of other Americans along the Left Bank. Burroughs, Ginsberg, Orlovksly, Kerouac, Corso, Norse, Gysin - they were all a part of that scene along the Seine. And all of it was captured in glorious black and white by famed Life Magazine photographer Loomis Dean.
2). THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING TO OUR REQUEST
American’s spent $6 Billion ($6,000,000,000) online last week beginning on Cyber-Monday. That was a 33% increase over 2010. Kerouac.com took in about 0.0000005% of that total. We’re on a continuing quest to increase our fair share of consumer spending and we want to thank all of you around the world who made an online purchase last week. We also saw quite a number of local San Franciscan’s walk in and purposefully spend with us specifically responding to our request for Help. Because of all of you we were able to make our rent check on-time at the beginning of the month. Thank you!
CHRISTMAS IN NORTH BEACH
Folks, with all the news about Cyber Monday exploding all records this week and with good financial news turning things around on many fronts around the world you might think things are booming in North Beach at Christmas time. We wish that were the case but it is actually very quiet.

You see, people simply do not come to North Beach to do their Christmas shopping. Everyone in the city goes to Union Square and suburbanites tend to go to the malls near their homes. And now, today, many people are buying from Amazon and other online retailers. But Amazon doesn’t have a Beat Museum you can come visit when you’re in San Francisco.

Summer is our time. Summer brings thousands of tourists from around the world. Christmas is our slowest season. Please help us offset this and close out 2011 in fine fashion by making a purchase at kerouac.com.
---------------------

TWO WAYS YOU CAN HELP.
We’ve made great strides this year. New exhibits, new programs and a new website. And the new Kerouac.com has been getting thousands upon thousands of visitors since we launched it - but those visitors are NOT translating into dollars in the register so we’re asking for your help directly.

1). IF YOU LIVE IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
If you live in or near San Francisco, please stop in and do some of your Holiday shopping with us. We’ve got more products than we’ve ever had and we’re fully stocked for your Holiday needs. There is a full array of fantastic items on the shelves we simply don’t post to the website because they’re so rare and collectible and in many cases one of a kind! Long out of print books by Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs and all the other Beats. Signed books by Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg and many, many others.

2). IF YOU LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE
Please go to Kerouac.com and make a purchase. We can ship anywhere in the world. We’ve got items you won’t find at Amazon or anywhere else: Beat Generation posters and t-shirts that we make ourselves, movies that only we carry because they’re so specialized they only appeal to a Beat audience.

http://www.kerouac.com/shop/

If you live out of the SF BAY area and are interested in any of our signed, rare or unusual items, give us a call or send an email and we’ll tell you what we have.
PLEASE HELP US THRIVE!
We’ve been in North Beach for over five years now. We see a very bright future. We DO need some financial help from our core group of Beat brethren from around the world to help us get through the slow cycle. Please do what you can.

Yes! Time for me to make a purchase at Kerouac.com!
1). NEW WEBSITE LAUNCH - KEROUAC.COM

www.kerouac.com

It is with great pride and much appreciation that we announce the launch of our NEW Kerouac.com website today. This new website has been some time in the making. There are many people who were involved in the creation and rollout.

Many thanks to Brian Clevenger who first approached us a few years ago when he designed our “On The Road” and “Howl” posters that have been so wildly received and that now decorate homes and dorm rooms around the world. Also, The Beat Museum’s very own webmaster J. Brandon LoBerg who worked closely with the good folks at Gyro San Francisco on all technical aspects of the site. And the good folks at The Allen Ginsberg Trust (AllenGinsberg.org) were most gracious with Allen’s images that are entrusted to them.

Brandon and Brian worked with an extremely talented team who really delivered for us. Any factual errors in the website are mine and mine alone. Please take a very close look at our new site and if you’re inclined please tell us what you think.
Special thanks to:
2). JEOPARDY! BEAT GENERATION STYLE

“I’ll Take ‘Name the City’ for $800, Alex...”

The Beat Museum celebrated our 5th year here in North Beach this past summer. Well, we really didn’t “celebrate” it, in fact we kind of let it pass us by. No parties, no hoity-toity big deal ceremonies with guest luminaries and celebrities. We considered going all out to mark the occasion and decided our time would be better spent building new exhibits and updating our website and making even bigger plans for the future.

So, how do we know we’re having an impact, changing people’s lives and making a statement to the world if we’re not having a party to celebrate our anniversary? Witness Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions from November 15, 2011. A few minutes into the show (at the 6:12 mark to be precise). The answer is: “The Beat Museum in North Beach” and the question, of course, is “What is San Francisco.”

Click here to see Alex Trebek give a nod to our fine institution at the 6:12 minute mark:
http://www.kerouac.com/blog/2011/11/the-beat-museum-on-jeopardy/

A). DRUNKEN ANGEL
Book Signing

Alan Kaufman is the editor of both The Outlaw Bible of Poetry and The Outlaw Bible of American Literature and the author of Jew Boy, Matches and other works His latest is a brutal account of his alcohol addiction which nearly cost him everything. Few titles have captured a more harrowing depiction of alcoholic ruin or recovery’s spiritual triumph.

B). THE ONE & ONLY - LU ANNE HENDERSON & THE BEAT GENERATION

Book Signing
Thursday, December 8th - 7:00 pm
The Beat Museum

Lu Anne Henderson is best known as Marylou, Dean Moriarty’s teenage bride who comes to New York on the very first page of On The Road. Beyond that the world has known very little of the real life Lu Anne Henderson and Gerry Nicosia (author of Memory Babe) makes the case there never would have been a Beat Generation had Lu Anne not brought Jack and Neal together.

The back story is Nicosia was asked by Walter Salles (Director of the upcoming screen version of OTR) to help deepen the understanding in the minds of the actors of the people they were portraying. During the course of that work Nicosia re-discovered a 7 hour audio tape interview he had conducted with Lu Anne in 1978 and that had been stored in the very robust Memory Babe archives. Using that interview as a base Nicosia fills in the historical record with recollections by Al Hinkle (Big Ed Dunkel from OTR) as well as Anne Marie Santos, Lu Anne Henderson’s daughter by her second husband Ray Murphy.

No stranger to controversy Nicosia stirs the pot of Beat lore in a way that will surprise, delight and possibly even outrage the true Beat afficionado. A must read!

Click here for event book signing details or to buy a copy of Nicosia’s new book. If you live outside of San Francisco and would like Gerry to sign your copy on December 8th, please write PLEASE SIGN in the comments section of the order form.

4). “Learning to Haight” - a new novel

You don’t have to be a long time celebrated author like Alan Kaufman or Gerry Nicosia to get the word out anymore. With today’s technology even first timers can gain long reach. And that’s exactly what Andrew Bardin Williams did with his novel “Learning to Haight”.

It’s the story of Jack McClure, a reporter for the SF Daily Mirror, who is assigned to write an article about an influential figure from the city's past. A beatnik, a hippie and a one-time movie star, Dean Simmons is anything but an easy interview, but Jack knows that getting to know the "real" Dean is his ticket off the news desk. Along the way, Jack learns from Dean what it means be an activist. “The Sixties didn’t teach us how to change the world. It taught us that we should change the world.”

Click here for the details on Andrew’s webiste, read the first chapter for free and purchase the ebook. Note to aspiring writers: there are a lot of ways to publish in 2011.
6). THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!

Dear friends,

We’re living in interesting times and I hope you feel you have much to be thankful for in your life. Whether you live in the United States and celebrate Thanksgiving with us or live elsewhere in the world, I want you to know we consider everyone on our email list to be part of our extended family here at The Beat Museum. Some of you have literally been receiving these newsletters for fifteen years. Some of you just joined our Beat family yesterday. You’re 15,000 strong these days and growing every day.

Regardless of how long you’ve been reading the Beats you’re a part of the human fabric that celebrates and encourages their themes and values. Values such as Compassion for your fellow man, Tolerance of those who are different and purposefully looking for and finding Joy in life.

We wish you and all your loved ones peace, joy, love, health and prosperity this Thanksgiving and Holiday Season.

I’ll end with a quote from Dharma Bums, my favorite Kerouac quote of all time and forever:

“But let the mind beware that though the flesh be bugged the circumstances of existence are pretty glorious.”

Happy Holidays!

1). DAVID AMRAM AT THE BEAT MUSEUM
David Amram played in North Beach at The Beat Museum last Monday night and the neighborhood is still talking about it. We screened “Pull My Daisy” and David invited participants on stage for an impromptu Poetry Jam, reading works by Howard Hart, Philip Lamantia and Jack Kerouac. The event ended at 10pm and people were still milling about until 2am! We had to send out for pizza.
Our good friends in Jack’s home town of Lowell are doing it again - for the 26th time. Lowell Celebrates Kerouac is next weekend, October 6-10. If you’ve never been to Jack’s hometown this is the time to go, what with midnight tours and musical treats by people who are all there for the same reason you’ll be there - everyone loves Jack!
5). ON THE ROAD4KEROUAC
There’s a brand new website that just came online that’s kind of fun. It’s put together by some students in France and it’s called On The Road 4 Kerouac. I like it because it’s a participatory website. They’re asking people to send them a document of what On The Road and Kerouac mean to you. This is a dual language enterprise, both English and French, the two languages Jack Kerouac spoke. It’s also fitting because MK2, one of the production companies behind the upcoming film On The Road, is headquartered in Paris.
7). FAREWELL TO THE MIGHTY BEATMOBILE - A JOB WELL DONE
We’re releasing The Beatmobile from her service to The Beat Museum. We acquired her in 2003, toured the entire United States twice in 2004 and 2005 and then took her to various Northern California gigs a few times since then but for the most part The Beat Museum on Wheels has been in storage for the last few years.

The time has come to allow The Beatmobile to move on and enrich the lives of other people like she’s enriched ours. We haven’t yet decided exactly HOW we’re going to let her go or WHEN but if you’re interested in either the RV or the trailer, send an email to jerry@kerouac.com and I’ll send you more details. FYI, The RV is a 1987 Airstream 345 (34.5 feet long, with full bedroom in back) with a gasoline Chevy 454. Serious inquiries only, please.
8). BIG NEWS COMING SOON
Five years ago when we first opened in San Francisco we penciled in a ‘49 Hudson onto our floor plan and put out the word we were looking for one. For a couple of years we showcased a’41 Pontiac and billed it as the kind of car Neal Cassady might have stolen.
Things are about to change.
- Lowell Celebrates Kerouac -
October 6 - October 10, 2011

“Everybody goes home in October,” according to Jack Kerouac. And that’s the reason Lowell Celebrates Kerouac is held the first weekend of October in Jack’s hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts. I’ve said it before, but we have SO many new subscribers this last year I want to be sure everyone knows: if you’re a Kerouac fan and you can get to Lowell that weekend, do it! It’s an occassion put on by friends for friends. It’s an embracing time not to be missed.
5). PENN JILLETTE (PENN & TELLER) VISITS THE BEAT MUSEUM
Who would have guessed that Penn Jillette was hugely influenced by Allen Ginsberg. Penn stopped into The Beat Museum last week and to pay tribute to Allen posed next to one of our favorite Ginsberg photographs. Sometimes you just have to see a picture to believe it.

6). AL HINKLE'S NEW WEBSITE
Big Ed Dunkel from “On The Road” has his own website. Or, to be more precise, Al Hinkle does. Al was Neal Cassady’s childhood friend from Denver. They knew each other when they were young teenagers and he’s the one who eventually moved to California and got Neal his job as a brakeman for The Southern Pacific Railroad. Al and his wife Helen (Galatea, in On The Road) lived near the Cassady’s in San Jose and when Carolyn Cassady wrote her book “Off The Road” she dedicated it to her two "angels" - Al & Helen Hinkle.

Check out Al’s new website - he’s got stories no one has ever heard!
1). MERRY PRANKSTER'S BUS TRIP - LA HONDA TO NYC 1964 - MOVIE RELEASE
You've probably seen some of the footage over the years. The Prankster's bus "Further" with Neal Cassady at the wheel traveling from Kesey's place in La Honda to the NYC World's Fair in 1964. Ken was driving to NY to participate in a book release for "Sometimes a Great Notion" his second novel and took along some friends - Ken Babbs, George Walker, Steve Lambrecht (Zonker), Ron Bevirt (Hassler) and Paula Sunstren (Gretchin Fetchin Slime Queen). Along the way they met up with Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and Tim Leary - and just happened to create the Psychedelic Revolution.

Long available as a VHS and later a DVD directly from Zane Kesey many believed the film would never be publicly available on a mass scale because the 16MM film didn't sync up with the reel to reel audio tape recordings. Legend has it the tape recorders were being driven off the generators on the bus and every time Neal hit the gas the reel to reels would speed up or slow down making the sync impossible.

I saw the film at a sneak peak here in SF along with 2 of Neal & Carolyn's kids, John Allen and Jami. They were both sitting in wonder looking at footage of their father from almost fifty years ago, much of which they'd never seen before. The movie has been on pay-per-view for the last month and hits the theaters starting TONIGHT and throughout the month in select cities.
2). MORE HUFFINGTON POST ARTICLES

Check out our latest blog on The Huffington Post. Please email it, tweet it and "like" it on Facebook if you will. This is an expanded article (complete with PHOTOS) of a short piece I wrote about my parents about a year ago - and why they're the reason I fell in love with The Beats. It's probably the one piece we've gotten the most responses on in all the years I've been writing this newsletter. In a quest to understand my own parents (and hence myself) I studied the Beats for the contrast and eventually wound up creating The Beat Museum.
